What Does an Engaged Team Look Like?

How does this magic formula come to life? It starts by fostering better workplace conversations!

I had the privilege of being on a highly engaged team early in my career. Being at work was a pleasure and engaging with my team was effortless.  Focus on people was at the heart of the organization.

  • We were respected for our opinions and limitations.
  • Leaders trusted in our ability to deliver quality.
  • Creative meetings, team celebrations, flex hours and long lunches were often on the menu.
  • Leaders shared business impacts and results.

Thinking about this now, I realize that it was the daily conversations with team members and leaders that made it a memorable, productive work experience.

Real Recognition Radio: A Better Workplace Conversation

I was reminded of this experience while listening to my interview hosted by Roy Saunderson and S. Max Brown on Real Recognition Radio. The show features guests whose goal is to create better, more positive workplaces.

During the the 1-hour conversation, Tanveer Naseer (Montreal business coach) and I provide powerful tips for engaging employees.  Below are my top ten picks to engage employees.

1. Establish rapport – start with the positives

2. Be authentic – speak the truth and be true to your word

3. Listen – you do not need to be speak to be heard

4. Be human – respect others for who they are, their whole person, not just what they do

5. Have confidence – acknowledg limitations to build strength in vision and goals

6. Celebrate strengths – Recognize what is done well, do it often, link it to the company goals

7. Engage – Ask for feedback, get opinions, acknowledge and use what you are told

8. Empower – Trust employees to do their jobs right

9. Know yourself – how you feel mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually has a big effect on how well you engage others

10. Offer 3+1 performance improvement feedback – provide frequent detailed feedback on 3 things done well and 1 thing that can be done better in the future

In your experience what engages employee motivation and boosts performance? What was your key take away from the interview?
