2011 New Year celebrationIn 2010, I experimented with featuring more voices on the blog, publishing your posts on Authentic Recognition and Strategies for Offering Feedback. I loved what you all had to share, and want to showcase your stories more regularly in 2011! The plan is to present a different theme each month and open it up to your thoughts on the matter.

January’s Theme

Feedback, both positive and negative, comes to us in different forms, in various situations, and in all stages of life and work. But a lot of the time, we don’t really listen to the feedback and accept it. It can be a difficult thing to accept praise, criticism, and suggestions—often due to our own insecurities, ego, judgments, stubbornness… and the list goes on. However, when we do learn to accept that feedback, great things can come out of it.

How have you learned to accept feedback, both positive and negative? How has the acceptance process helped you?

This month, a lot of us make resolutions and action plans for the brand new year. How do your resolutions tie into the theme of accepting feedback?

    At times accepting feedback (especially “constructive” criticism) is tough, but it depends on the credibility of the source, the context and how it’s delivered.

    I’ve had vague, negative comments from baseless allegations levelled at me from a supervisor who was out to get me. By contrast, I had an honest, well-intended constructive comment delivered by a kindly supervisor who respected me – huge difference in how I received the feedback!

    When someone critiques your area of expertise (which they possess none of), it’s hard to take it seriously. When people are not basing feedback or an evaluative comments on objective data, it lacks credence. Heresay is not enough.

    Toastmaster’s advocates the sandwich method: postive-constructive-positive – a bit predictable but much easier to hear and absorb, and a reminder of interpersonal sensitivities. Respectful feedback in the spirit of continuous improvement is one of the most powerful tools for workplace performance improvement.

    Absolutely. I have been exploring this facet of accepting feedback as well. Why is it so difficult for us to accept feedback. Maybe over the years people have lost the ability to offer honest authentic feedback and therefore we have a hard time believing and accepting it!

    Our homework is to offer it authentically (non-verbal communication is key) or not at all until we are ready!

    Items such as foldable table and chair are handy and can be kept away when not in use.
    With appropriate maintenance the outdoor cushions can last about five-8 years.
    Finding a decent seat, to put together with this couch, will make
    a comfortable lounging area for you, or your guests.
